Joan Louise Hudson

Joan Louise Hudson was born on July 17, 1915 in Nelson BC. She grew up in the Kootenays and started school in Trail Central and graduated from Trail High School. In Trail, she took part in church operettas, took piano and dancing lessons and also skated, skied, swam, was on the track team and took up fencing. She was a Girl Guide and loved camping. She became a Girl Guide Captain of the 1st Trail Co. and became Camp Commandant so she could take guides in the area to Camp Rory.

Joan graduated from the University of Alberta where she played basketball and won a trophy for the highest individual score in track and field. She taught in Trail at the Elementary School from 1938 to 1943 when she came to Chilliwack to teach Physical Education, English and some French. She taught English only in later years at Chilliwack Senior Secondary.

She played at Meadowlands until the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club opened where she became a charter member. She held various executive positions in the Ladies Section and was club champion a couple of times. She was a founding member of the University Women’s Club of Chilliwack and continued to enjoy belonging. When she moved from Chilliwack to Lindell Beach, she became secretary of the Lindell Beach Residents Association for many years. She enjoyed being a member of the Cultus Lake branch of the O.A.P.A. where she was a director for many years. She was also involved in the Cultus Lake Memorial Church and was secretary of the Church Board for 2 years. Her love of travel took her to most places on earth. Her slides of these places were often shown to various groups. Joan was one of the first directors of Lifetime Learning and became their first secretary. Playing Bridge was one of her hobbies, as were reading, painting and drawing, gardening, listening to music and going to plays and concerts. Her final years were spent at Chilliwack Lifestyles residence where she made many new friends and was an inspiration to all who knew her. She is survived by her nieces Linda Hudson, Jane Keyes, Mary Nash and nephew John Hudson. She has eight grandnieces and nephews, a great grandniece and two great grandnephews, all who knew and loved her, and miss her deeply.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, September 30 at Cultus Lake Memorial Church, 74 Fir St, Cultus Lake. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Chilliwack Hospital Memorial Fund.
