After a long and challenging illness, it is with heavy hearts that the Jansen family announces the passing of John Jansen. Born in Wageningen, the Netherlands, he lived a full life as the husband of Wilma (married 58 years), father of two sons, Steven (Helen) and Darren (Jen), and two daughters, Deborah (Clarence) and Teresa (Bill), Opa of 15 grandchildren and their spouses, and 23 great grandchildren. He is survived by 6 siblings and was predeceased by 2 as well as by 3 brothers-in-law.
John was an accountant by profession. He became mayor of Chilliwack in 1983 and MLA in Victoria in 1986. Then he was appointed minister of several portfolios, including Health and Finance. His unwavering passion was for the betterment of his city, province, and country. His acute dedication to the needs of our growing city prompted him to work with his utmost abilities for the University of the Fraser Valley, Chilliwack General Hospital, and downtown business revitalization.
John and Wilma enjoyed many years of travelling together, by ship and by motor home. John cherished his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Many thanks to Dr. S. Bartel, Dr. B. Dueck, Dr. S. Markey, Dr. N. Almas, and Dr. V. Choong, as well as the nurses at Fraser Health Net Care Day Program. Many thanks to Chilliwack General Hospital, Oceanside Tertiary Older Adult Care and RCNA Home Care.
