January 2, 1942 – June 17, 2025
Chilliwack, British Columbia
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Manfred (Fred) Frederick Baumbach, who passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, in Chilliwack, British Columbia, at the age of 83.
Born on January 2, 1942, in Schwallungen, Germany, Fred immigrated to Canada as a teenager and settled with his family in Pacific Exploration, BC. He attended school in nearby Bralorne, and through determination and hard work, earned his certification as a tradesperson. Fred went on to build a long and respected career at CAE in Vancouver, where he worked his way up to foreman and remained until his retirement.
In the late 1960s, Fred purchased a farm in the Bradner area of Abbotsford, where he raised various livestock and found peace in the rhythms of rural life. Fred’s love for the outdoors and for exploring British Columbia never waned. Well into his later years, he could be found on daily drives—his way of soaking in the beauty and wonder of the province he called home.
Fred was also a talented and dedicated shuffleboard player. He proudly served in leadership roles at his local club, including President, and cherished the camaraderie the game brought him.
Fred was fiercely proud of his German roots and equally proud of his Canadian citizenship. He often shared stories of his early life and his journey between cultures, always with warmth, humour, and a deep appreciation for both.
Fred was predeceased by his father Walter, his beloved mother and stepfather—affectionately known as Oma and Opa Preckel—his brother Ralph, and his sister Doris.
He is survived by his son, Kelly Wade Baumbach; his daughter, Susan Roxane Elizabeth Friesen and her husband Daniel Simmons; grandchildren Melissa and David; and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his step-brothers Klaus, Tom, and Frank Preckel; step-sister Karen (Preckel) Brady; and a large extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will deeply miss his generous heart, adventurous spirit, and quiet strength.
Fred leaves behind a legacy of kindness, curiosity, and resilience. He will be fondly remembered and forever loved by all who had the honour of knowing him.
With Gratitude
Daniel and Susan
