Vivian Marion Street

Goldie was predeceased by her parents Charlie and Dorothy Finney, her husband Orville Street, her second husband John Vail and her companion of almost 20 years, Roy Gillespie.

She is survived by her sister Phyllis Fraser, her son Lorne (Lark) Street, her daughter Della (Terry) Whitlam, and granddaughters Laura (Jeremy) Hudec, Liana (Robert) McCall, Jessica (Ken) Brennan and Sarah (Julian Mondragon) Whitlam. She is also survived by 5 great grandchildren.

As a teenager in the early 1940's, one of Goldie's proudest accomplishments was her membership in the Chilliwack Riding Club and her participation in their Musical Ride. The Ride was patterned after the RCMP Musical Ride and was taught to the 25 Riding Club members by a retired RCMP officer. Goldie would ride her palomino horse “Tony” from her parents' farm on Lickman Road into the Chilliwack fairgrounds (located, in those days, near the Evergreen Hall) for practices every weekend.

Goldie was an elementary school teacher and, from all accounts, a pretty good one. After graduating from Chilliwack Senior High School in 1942, she attended one year of teacher training at Normal School in Vancouver. Her first teaching assignment was at Robertson Elementary School, from 1944 to 1947. After marrying Orv Street in 1947, Goldie left teaching to raise her family, work in the home and on the 9 acre farm they purchased on Lickman Rd.

She returned to teaching in January of 1963 at Watson Elementary where, on her first day back to work after 16 years away from the profession, she walked into a classroom of 42 Grade 2 students! During the remainder of her career she taught at Watson, Atchelitz and Evans Elementary schools, retiring in 1989 at age 65. Goldie was not the kind of person who stopped teaching when the final school bell rang. Family members who left notes, letters, or other correspondence lying around the house would frequently find their spelling and grammar corrected with a red pen!

Goldie remained active, involved and interested in what life had to offer. With her long time friend and companion Roy Gillespie, she was able to join in travels to places like Costa Rica, Florida, Oahu, the Maritimes and England. Later in life she took up carpet bowling and enjoyed playing Bingo. She was proficient with her computer and often left comments on her kids’ and grandkids’ FaceBook pages.

She enjoyed good health for her whole life and even at age 97, her passing was unexpected. She left us the way she would have wanted, quietly and without a lot of fuss.
