Wayne Alfred Wright passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, at the age of 82. Wayne was born on September 16, 1943, in Victoria, BC and moved to Calgary in his teens, where he met the love of his life, Lynn. Wayne and Lynn were married for 46 wonderful years until her passing in 2013.
After they were married, Wayne and Lynn moved to Utah where Wayne completed Master of Social Work and Master of Science (Sociology) degrees. The experience of living and working on the Uintah and Oray reservation during his studies would continue to influence and shape his compassionate worldview throughout his life (along with his interest in Indigenous art). It was in Utah where daughter Jennifer was born, followed by son Jason. The Wrights moved to Chilliwack where Wayne became the Director of Social Work at Chilliwack Hospital and son Jared was born. The Wrights were on the move again to Victoria, before settling in North Delta, where Wayne was made Director of Social Work at Vancouver General and UBC Hospitals. Wayne and Lynn retired in 2000, and eventually returned to Chilliwack, where they established a strong community of friends.
Wayne will be always remembered for his kind and loving nature, his ability to listen and provide guidance without judgement, and his subtle, warm sense of humour.
Wayne loved exploring nature and would often take his children (and dog Czar) on camping and canoeing trips. In later years, this took the form of longer kayaking adventures off the coast of BC, with his kids or on his own, where he could enjoy the peace and tranquility of the surroundings. An advocate of life-long learning, Wayne saw these nature experiences as teachable moments for his children, imparting his values of self-preservation, commitment to the natural world, and the importance of quiet contemplation (despite having the TV on at all times).
His children remember somewhat fondly Wayne’s “Cajun” steaks on the BBQ, as well as his inexplicably consistent rendition of the worst chilli recipe known to man.
Wayne will be lovingly remembered by his family including his four grandchildren, Sheldyn, Carter, Logan and Ethan, and his extended family of friends. Wayne valued his family above all else, and this family-first sensibility continues to live on through his children.
The family would like to thank the Chilliwack General Hospital and Cascade Hospice staff for their warmth and kindness over the last weeks.
A service and memorial will be held at St. Mary’s Parish in Chilliwack on June 6 at 11am.
