Elmer Eugene Shepherd Sr.

Mr. Elmer “Gene” Shepherd Sr. 83 of China Grove passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016. Born on June 13, 1932 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Ernest Adam and Mae Lynch Shepherd. Mr. Shepherd attended China Grove High School and was a longtime member of Mt. Zion United Church of Christ. He served his country in the US Navy. He retired from the VA Medical Center in 1987 after 37 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his sister Patsy Shepherd Childress. Those left to cherish his memory is his wife of 59 ½ years, Barbara Deal Shepherd, his son Elmer “Spanky” Shepherd Jr. (Paula) and granddaughter Laura Shepherd all of China Grove. Also surviving him is his sister Verline Shepherd Sloop of China Grove and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 at Greenlawn Cemetery in China Grove with Rev. Mark Burns, minister. Visitation will follow at Mt. Zion United Church of Christ from 10:30 til 12:00 in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Zion New Construction Fund P.O. Box 1298 China Grove. NC 28023.
