Filiberto Velasco, also known as Gil was born on August 22, 1938, entered eternal rest on July 7, 2025 at the age of 86. He leaves behind a profound legacy of friendship, warmth, generosity and an unwavering love of God, life and family that will forever resonate in the hearts of all who knew him as a dedicated father of six - Armando, Hector, Mari, Jesus, Nora (Lina), Gilbert and loving husband to Maria Irene (Nene).
Filiberto devoted over 70 years of his life to auto mechanics, a career he passionately pursued from his first LA job at Filex Chevrolet. Throughout his career he taught his craft to many family members, including brothers, brothers-in-law and sons.
Despite having only a first grade formal education, Filiberto's remarkable determination led him to teach himself to read and write at a very young age all while working tirelessly to provide for his family. His profound devotion to his Catholic beliefs was the cornerstone of his life, leading to join choir groups in both Los Angeles and Phoenix.
Filibertos love of sport propelled him to excel at multiple sports including amiture cycling, boxing and futbol soccer. He became a trainer in both boxing and soccer. Filiberto became the proud owner and founder of the soccer club Submarino in LA, originally founded in Guadalajara, Mexico by his uncle.
Filibertos bravery helped his family migrate to the United States in 1967, with the determination and in search of a better life for his family, became legal residents in 1971 and finally became a naturalized US citizen in 1999 but never forgot his roots.
Filiberto was known for his outgoing personality and infectious smile that would attract attention everywhere he went. He cultivated many friendships that spanned multiple decades (four score). His loyalty as a friend was first class. His loyalty and love for family was unmatched and unconditional. Filiberto was the family's ROCK but was also known to his family as their Superman. His energy was strong, boundless and constant as he always looked for the best in everyone.
Amongst Filibertos many talents, he loved dancing to any kind of music, singing rancheras and boleros. Filibertos favorite performers were Marc Antonio Solis, Chente, Pedro Infante and Javier Solis who love to impersonate.
Above all, Filiberto cherished his childhood love and soulmate Maria Irene who he loved immensely, unconditionally and eternally. Filiberto's pride for his six children, Armando, Hector, Mari, Jesus, Nora (LIna) and Gilbert was evident in the way he spoke about them whenever given the opportunity. Papa Fili was blessed with 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, of whom he loved to play with and playfully scare often. Filibertos zest for life led him on many adventures and he inspired others to live life with ambition, happiness and joy in their heart.
Filiberto was preceded in passing by his parents Antonio and Asuncion Velasco, siblings Alfredo, Marcelino, Ignacio and Andrea. While he will no longer be physically present and will be deeply missed, his spirit and memory will live on in his family and friends hearts forever.
Funeral services to celebrate and honor Filiberto's life will be held July 30, 2025 for a chapel viewing and rosary at 5pm at Funeraria Del Angel Funeral home, Chino, Ca and Mass celebration on July 31, 2025 at 11am at St Paul The Apostle Catholic Church in Chino Hills. All who were touched by his kindness and light are invited to gather in remembrance of this amazing man.
