
Etta Daniels Mercer, widow of Donald Jenner Mercer, died May 27, 2018 at Wake Med Center in Raleigh. Etta was born July 14, 1922 on Cedar Island, NC, the daughter of Cora and James Riley Daniels. She completed high school in Carteret County and Business School in Raleigh with her lifelong dear cousin, Ethel Van Horn.
Mrs. Mercer was employed at Cherry Point Naval Air Station and the US Post Office in Creedmoor, NC before retiring in 1983. She was married to Donald Mercer for 50 years. Mrs. Mercer resided throughout Eastern NC her entire life for many years in Creedmoor, Cedar Island and most recently at Clayton near their attentive Mercer family.
Etta was a wonderful hostess, excellent cook and elegant, well dressed and proper Southern woman in every way. She was a lifelong United Methodist and member of The United Methodist Women. Mrs. Mercer was especially proud of her role as Grandmother and Great-Grandmother as “MeMa Etta.”
Etta is survived by her daughters, Nancy Trogdon of Clayton, Donna Surrett of Newberry, SC, Grandchildren, Myles of Greenville, SC, Lydia of Clemson, SC and Alec Surrett of Indian Land, SC, Great-Grandson, Forest Surrett of Greenville, SC and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Lydia Lupton and brother, Floyd Daniels.
Her service and entombment will be on Tuesday, May 29 at 3 pm at Pinecrest Memorial Park, Hwy. 70, Clayton. Visitation will be 1 hour prior the service at 2pm.
