

Lillie Eudell Formyduval Smith of Clayton passed away peacefully on June 18, 2016, at her home with her family around her. She was born on August 19, 1916, in Hallsboro, North Carolina to Joy Jerome Formyduval and Lillie Batten Formyduval. Eudell was graduated from Appalachian State Teacher’s College in 1939, with degrees in History, English and Health & Physical Education. She was the May Queen in the Spring Festival her senior year. She and her husband came to the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh after college and she served as a house mother for 15 years. She then taught four years in Wake County and three years in New Hanover County. She became the first woman Principal in New Hanover County at Alderman Elementary School and served from 1967 to 1980. During her summers, she worked at the North Carolina Baptist Assembly in Southport for 20 years while her husband managed the Assembly. The Eudell and Fred Smith Conference Center is named for them on that site for their service. She was active in the education sorority Alpha Delta Kappa beginning in 1961, serving in almost every position in that organization. She received recognition in 1977, for helping to start Temple Baptist Church in Wilmington. She was recognized in 1981, by the New Hanover School System for her outstanding personal and professional contributions to educational leadership in the schools. From 1987 to 1990, she served on the Board of Directors of the NC Baptist Foundation. She attended Tabernacle Baptist Church in Raleigh, Southport Baptist Church in Southport where she was Sunday School Director in both churches. While in Clayton, she attended First Baptist Church and White Oak Baptist Church. She was a hand bell ringer for 35 years and a solo ringer for 17 years. She belonged to the Raleigh Woman’s Club, the Wilmington Woman‘s Club, and the Woman’s Club of Raleigh for over 50 years of service in the Woman’s Club. She danced with Fred Astaire from 1991 to 1998 in Wilmington and won numerous awards in Charlotte, Asheville, St. Petersburg, FL, and Daytona Beach, FL. Eudell is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50+ years, Fred Julius Smith, Sr. She is preceded in death by her brothers Joy Wendell Formyduval and Herbert Samuel Formyduval and sisters Marguerite Formyduval Borneman and Addie Ruth Formyduval Kelly. She is survived by sons, Fred Julius Smith, Jr. and wife Ginny, and Irvin Duval Smith, Sr. and wife Jan, all of Clayton. She is survived by sisters Mary Evelyn Formyduval White, Lollie Mildred Formyduval Southern, both of Winston-Salem, and Gladys Formyduval Phillips of Whiteville. She is survived by nine grandchildren and ten great grand children. Family visitation will be from 1:00-3:00pm on Monday, June 20, 2016 at White Oak Baptist Church in Clayton. A service celebrating Eudell’s life will follow visitation at 3:00 pm. A graveside service will be held the following day at 1:00 pm at Jersey Baptist Church in Linwood, NC.
