Susan married her husband Richard in 1971, after which they built 54 wonderful years together full of memories with family and friends. They chose New Bern, NC to build their lives and spent the majority of their years there raising their two children.
Susan’s early career was social work, but she gained her master’s degree in child development taking night classes at ECU when her children were young. Her later career was teaching disabled children. Her passion was to help people, but especially those that were unable to readily help themselves.
Susan was a fierce lover of nature and strived to make outside spaces beautiful. She also loved to read and often clipped articles that reminded her of her loved ones and would share them. She frequently stayed in touch through letters and postcards.
Most of all, Susan will be remembered for never backing down in the face of adversity. She met every challenge with grace and positivity, which were cherished by all that knew her and many attempt to emulate to this day.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Andrew. She is survived by her husband Richard, her daughter, Amy, and her sisters, Kathy Horan, Judy Gerow, and BJ Marino, along with their families.
Susan’s celebration of life will be held on September 20th, 2025, from 1-3pm at McLaurin Funeral Home located at 12830 Clayton Boulevard, Clayton, NC 27520.
