

He was in the US Coast Guard during WWII and was a proud veteran. On November 10, 1944, Jim married Grace Dolphin also of Springfield. They were married in New York City at St. Patrick’s Cathedral while he was on shore leave. He had to return to his ship that night.
Jim loved spending time at their summer cottage in Becket, located in the Berkshires of MA. He and Grace had many close friends and fun times. There he taught his daughters to swim, fish, and enjoy the outdoors.
Jim retired as a custodian for the City of Springfield School Dept. after 30 years of service and was given an amazing, memorable retirement party attended by more than 100 friends, family, teachers and School Dept. employees. Kids and faculty alike loved Mr. Pike.
Grace, his wife of 56 years passed in 2000. He leaves his two daughters, Beverly Prochnow (Richard) and Kathleen Dowler, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. “Papa” played an important role in raising his beloved grandson, James Dowler, especially in Jimmy’s early childhood.
