Born on November 6, 1955, in Flint, Michigan to Arlene and Walter VanNatter, Roy brought energy, laughter, and warmth into every room he entered. After high school, he played hockey at Michigan State University and later went on to earn his MBA from the University of Miami. In 1990, Roy made Florida his home, drawn by sunshine, sand, and the chance to be closer to his family.
Professionally, Roy worked as a purchasing manager in the construction industry, but his real talents came alive outside the office. He was an animated speaker, the raunchiest joke teller, a great dancer and singer, an avid sports fan, and always the life of the party! He was also a lover of boating, a round of golf and adventuring in his golf cart, motor bike, or Buick Electra.
Roy had a gift for making people laugh, for lighting up a room, and for always showing up—big-hearted, loud-voiced, and arms wide open. But above all else, Roy was a devoted father and “Papa.” His children and grandchildren were his greatest joy, his proudest legacy, and the source of a deep, soulful love that defined him.
Roy is survived by his mother, Arlene VanNatter; his children, Sandra (Matthew) Novatko and Bobby (Danielle) Van Natter; his treasured grandchildren, Landon, Isabella, and Ellyana Van Natter, and Barrett and Liberty Novatko; his sweetheart, Nancy Villanueva; siblings, Linda Mengel, Gary (Denise) VanNatter, and Norm VanNatter; and countless extended family and dear friends who will miss his laughter, his stories, and his spirit.
A service will be held at sea, where Roy’s ashes will be scattered in a place he loved.
In lieu of flowers, we would deeply appreciate it if you would share a memory of Roy in the comments below. These stories will be a comfort to family and friends in Roy’s memory. And we ask that you remember him by telling a good joke, dancing like no one’s watching, or simply raising a glass in his honor. Roy wouldn’t have it any other way.
