Arnold Quince Jarvis went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 27, 2014. He passed peacefully under the care of NE Georgia Hospice after suffering from complications of congestive heart failure. He was born on a small farm in rural Wilkes County (near Somers) North Carolina, to Quince and Emma Jarvis on April 25th, 1925. He moved to Winston-Salem in 1947 to work for the Mengel Box Company as a printer and remained loyally with the company through many changes for 39 years. He married Margie Johnson in February 1949, and they enjoyed 62 years together before her passing.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Quince and Emma Jarvis; three sisters, Maie Myers, Kathleen Mahaffey, Nannie Lee Mahaffey, and one brother, Grady Jarvis, and by his wife, Margie. Arnold is survived by two brothers, Gurney Jarvis of Gainesville, GA and Don Jarvis of McLeansville, NC . He is survived by two sons, David Jarvis, his wife, Chris Atkinson Jarvis of Chicago, Illinois, with their daughters Jennie Jarvis von Drehle, and her husband Ryan von Drehle of Chicago, with their daughters; and daughter Stephanie Jarvis of Traverse City, MI; and Kevin Jarvis, his wife, Lynn Vance Jarvis of Dawsonville, Georgia with their daughters, Ashley Jarvis Dawson with husband Tim Dawson of Cumming, GA and their daughters; and Michele Jarvis Crow, with husband Trey of Marietta, GA.
Arnold loved the Lord and told everyone about Him. He set a strong Christian example for his family and all who knew him. He was a deacon and member of Old Town Baptist Church since 1962 and two other churches in Winston-Salem prior to that. He loved Bluegrass Gospel music and a rainy day would often find him picking and singing the old songs and playing harmonica. The joy of the farm never left him and he loved to walk barefoot in the tilled soil, planting, hoeing and bringing in the produce. He surprised everyone by surviving several serious illnesses and doggedly regaining his mobility to take care of his wife during her final illness. He influenced the lives of his family as well as many caregivers, therapists and volunteers. He often said, “The Lord must still have something for me to do.”
The family will receive friends between 7pm and 9pm on Friday, October 3 at Frank Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. Services will be held at Old Town Baptist Church at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 4 with burial following at Crestview Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested for Senior Services of Winston-Salem or Old Town Baptist Church.
