Emma Katherine Thomas Kellogg, age 91, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2022, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem, NC. She was born February 4, 1931, the youngest of seven children of Lewis Sample, Sr., and Pearl Blanche Craddock Thomas of Stokesdale, NC.
After graduating from Stokesdale High School, Katherine studied nursing at NC Baptist Hospital. Through her nursing profession, she met her husband, Theodore Gleason Kellogg of Raleigh, who came to visit a friend in the hospital who was her patient. They married in 1954. Mr. Kellogg’s career with the Boy Scouts of America took them from Greensboro, NC, to Sumter, SC, and the Panama Canal Zone in Central America before returning to live in Pfafftown, NC, in 1968. Along the way they had two children, Karen and Theodore, Jr., “Bo.”
Mrs. Kellogg returned to nursing in 1970 after Mr. Kellogg suffered a significant heart attack in 1968 at the age of 42. She received her BS in Nursing from Winston-Salem State University in 1974, and her MA in Public Administration from Appalachian State University in 1976. She assumed a significant role in establishing the Home Health Care system in NC and Forsyth County and the Hospice system in Forsyth County. Mrs. Kellogg was instrumental in the creation of the North Carolina Association of Home Care and served as president of that same organization. Katherine helped to develop standards of care for in-home aides and nurses providing in-home care in North Carolina as an executive board member for the North Carolina Accreditation Commission. She served for 10 years on the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Hospice Board, and helped in the successful development of that agency in Forsyth County. Her twenty-two and a half years of service to public and home health were honored and recognized in December, 1993, by the NC Association of Public Health Nurse Administrators following her retirement in October, 1993. In May, 1996, Katherine received the Ellen B. Winston award, presented by the North Carolina Association of Home Care, honoring individuals who exemplify Dr. Winston’s goals of making in-home health care available for all North Carolina citizens.
Katherine was as proud of her efforts on behalf of NC Home Health Care as she was the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. Her favorite pastimes included yard sales, where she looked for treasures and bargains, reading, watching her favorite TV shows, and following the stock market, for which she kept a running ledger with copious entries. For years she met with a supportive circle of friends at K&W Cafeteria every Wednesday for breakfast. In later years, she loved going to Bojangles to get that free biscuit and coffee for breakfast. You could always find her with a Misty and a cup of coffee at the dining room table. Katherine loved her family and hosting extended family gatherings, especially on holidays. She was a loyal and protective matriarch.
Mrs. Kellogg was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore G. Kellogg, Sr., and her siblings; Sample, Mary, Charles, Mima, Annie Lee, and Helen.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Soderstrom (husband Lawrence), of Fernandina Beach, FL, and grandchildren Thomas, Erik, James, and Mary Soderstrom; and her son, Theodore, Jr. (wife Dianne), of Advance, NC, and grandchildren Theodore and Lain Kellogg. She is also survived by two of her nieces, Phyllis Greene of Stokesdale, NC, and Cindy Bolton, DDS, of Greensboro, NC; and a nephew, Charles Thomas , Jr., of Raleigh, NC.

A graveside service will be held at Stokesdale United Methodist Church in Stokesdale, NC, on Thursday, October 6, at 2:30 in the afternoon.
