

CLEMMONS - Herbert George Hauser Nov. 23, 1920 - Sept. 3, 2010 Mr. Herbert George Hauser of Clemmons and Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away Friday, September 3, 2010. He was born November 23, 1920, in Stokes County to Ira Bascom Hauser and Eunice Barbara George Hauser. Mr. Hauser was a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church since 1993 and was formerly a member of Green Street United Methodist Church for 48 years, serving as chairman of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Hauser graduated from Pinnacle High School in 1938 and served in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge.
On December 5, 1942, he married his high school sweetheart, Kathlyn Key. They both worked for Glenn L. Martin Aircraft in Baltimore, Maryland during the remainder of World War II. After returning to North Carolina, Mr. Hauser worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for 38 years. He began as a truck driver, hauling tobacco hogsheads, and later operated cigarette manufacturing machines in downtown Winston-Salem and later at Whitaker Park. He and Kathlyn raised their two children and were active in church and civic work in Winston-Salem.
He was well-remembered for his help with church suppers and civic activities. He particularly enjoyed family vacations and cookouts, vegetable gardening, and home repairs. When he retired, he devoted his time to his extended family, his church, the West Salem Civic Club, gardening, and repairing and creating mechanical items from his home workshop. In 1993, he and Kathlyn moved to Clemmons to be closer to their son, David, and his family. In 2007, he and Kathlyn moved from Clemmons to Salemtowne Retirement Community, where he enjoyed and appreciated the many staff members and friends with whom he interacted, and particularly the use of the woodworking shop there, where he built many birdhouses along with friend, Jim Forkner.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Kathlyn Key Hauser, of Salemtowne Retirement Community; his son, David Herbert Hauser and wife, Vicki of Clemmons, NC; his daughter, Pamela Hauser McNeill and husband, John of Wilmington,NC; grandsons, Andrew McNeill of Ellicott City, MD and Brent Hauser and wife, Jillian of Holly Springs, NC; and granddaughters: Beth Hauser Barrington and husband, Adam of Chapel Hill, NC and Alison McNeill McWilliams of Winchester, VA. Mr. Hauser had one sister, Norma Hauser Kelly, who is deceased, and one half-sister, Sandra Purdue Flora of Salem, VA.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 11, 11:30 a.m. at Clemmons United Methodist Church, 3700 Clemmons Rd. (Hwy 158), Clemmons, NC followed by a reception in the Church commons area and burial at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Clemmons United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 829, Clemmons, NC 27012, and Salemtowne Employee Christmas Fund, 1000 Salemtowne Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
