

Mr. James Arthur Clark, 84, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, November 29, 2010. He was born July 13, 1926 to Halifax C. and Mary Kathleen (Hummel) Clark in Melrose, Massachusetts. He grew up in Havertown, a Philadelphia suburb. Upon high school graduation, Mr. Clark joined the United States Navy in July 1944 and served on the destroyer SS Larson along the east coast and in Okinawa during WW II. This past May he joined a local group of veterans in the Flight of Honor Group and visited the WW II Veteran’s Memorial in Washington, DC., a trip he was very proud to be a part of.
He briefly attended the Citadel after the war, graduating from Temple University in Philadelphia and received his Master’s Degree from Drexel University.
Surviving family includes his wife of 54 years Ruth Freed Clark of Winston-Salem; two daughters Leslie Clark Gallop and husband Mark of Glastonbury, CT, Linda Clark Pazzaglini and husband Paul of Waxhall, NC; son Stephen Robert Clark and wife Beth of Raleigh, NC; Three granddaughters, Sarah Grace Clark, Allison Marie Clark, and Marcella C. Pazzaglini.
During his working career he taught on the college level at Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA and the American University in Washington, DC . He worked in Washington, DC for the Securities and Exchange Commission during the Kennedy Administration. In the spring of 1969 the family moved to Charlotte, NC where Jim became associated with Bank of America, until retirement, as a Trust Officer. After retirement he and his wife lived in Hendersonville, NC for eight years. Health issues brought them to North Carolina where they have lived for ten years. Mr. Clark was an avid reader of World History, enjoyed gardening, and with his wife, traveled extensively.
A Memorial Funeral Service celebrating the life of James Arthur Clark, will be conducted on Monday, December 6th, at 11:00 AM at Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 West 5th Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 (336-724-6311) with Senior Minister Dr. Peter C. Graves officiating. Family will visit with their friends following the service in the Centenary Church Parlor.
