After a long and valiant fifteen month battle with declining health, O.M. Caroon “Mickey” died peacefully on September 9, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Caroon withstood significant suffering from his various illnesses with courage, determination, and humor which was a model for all of those who loved him and also his various caregivers. He will be truly missed by his family and friends, but also his golfing buddies and his neighborhood cronies.
Mr. Caroon retired after thirty years service as an employee of the State of North Carolina where he worked first as a parole officer in the NC mountains and later as a child support agent in Charlotte NC. He graduated from Grainger High School in Kinston, NC and loved keeping in touch with his fellow alum. He attended Lenoir Community College and Guilford College. He was seen by his parolees and clients as fair and understanding, but also “by the book.” He always had wonderful stories about his days in Parole with his partner, Bob, convincing his parolees to “come peacefully” which they always did. After retirement, Mr. Caroon found his “dream job” working first at Oak Valley Golf and Country Club and lastly at Bermuda Run Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed playing a round of golf, but also encouraged club members with their golfing efforts. Mr. Caroon was well known for his storytelling from childhood adventures to tales of his grandchildren. All of his nursing staff learned more about his five grandchildren and their accomplishments than needed to be shared. Mr. Caroon is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Suzanne Nassef Caroon, whom he always supported in her academic and professional efforts.
Surviving also are his two daughters, Michele (Jerry) and Kathi (Matthew) and five grandchildren, Brittany, Alexandria, Trevor, Thadeus, and Samantha, and two brothers Dave (Debbie) and Ron (Julie). He will be sorely missed.
The funeral mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church on Kinnamon Road in Clemmons, NC at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 16, 2023 with interment of ashes at Westlawn Memorial Park in Clemmons. The family will receive guests one hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Trellis Hospice and Supportive Care (101 Hospice Ln, Winston-Salem, NC 27103) or Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
The family would like to especially thank the Hospice staff that tended to our every need including Teresa and Megan of the nursing staff, Kelly our chaplain, Talia our social worker, Emily our music therapist, and Fiora our grief counselor. You all made a trying time so much more manageable.
