Mason was born in Winston-Salem on December 16, 1969. He graduated from Mount Tabor High School in 1988 where he played varsity baseball and soccer. Mason went on to get his bachelors degree from High Point University where he studied journalism and communication and was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. After graduating in 1992, Mason worked with the Winston Salem Journal for 23 years as prep writer covering high school sports. He was honored by the NC High School Athletic Association by receiving the Tim Stevens Medial Representative of the Year award. Mason treasured the friendships he made with co-workers, athletic administrators, coaches and players throughout his time at the Journal.
Mason also co-authored and published three hardcover collegiate children’s mascot books for Wake Forest, High Point and NC State with his lifelong friend Chip Crutchfield.
Mason loved fishing at the coast for flounder, Kodiak, routing for the Redskins, and watching the Braves. As much as he loved the Redskins, he had equal disdain for the Dallas Cowboys. Most of all, he enjoyed his time with his family, whether it was playing baseball with his son or spending quality time with his daughter.
In addition to Mason’s many talents, one of his greatest gifts was the ability to make anyone laugh in any situation.
He is survived by his wife, Kristin Hill Linker; daughter Molly and son Bo; parents, Mason and Martha Linker; sister, Mary Margaret Clark; brother-in-law, Neil Clark; nieces, Martha Wood Clark and Jane Clark; in-laws, David and Janet Hill; and many close friends.
A memorial service will be held Monday, May 13th at 2pm at Centenary UMC, 646 W 5th Street, Winston Salem.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Chris Paul Family Foundation.
