Born in Cleveland, Ohio to Harry and Ruth (Kahn) Jacobson, Don grew up surrounded by a loving extended family. He was joined soon after by a brother Eldon (Jake). He lost his dear mother at 15 but was fortunate to be supported by his large tight knit family, and this deep family passion guided him throughout his life. Don attended Hawken School, Western Reserve Academy and Western Reserve University. After serving in the Air Force, he returned to Cleveland and joined his father at Harry Jacobson’s, a fine gentleman's clothing store on Euclid Avenue in the Old Arcade. Over the years, Jacobson & Co. grew under his skillful hand as a haberdasher into one of the finest men’s stores in the Midwest. He clothed many distinguished people from Cleveland and across the globe, including Muhammed Ali and Harry Belafonte. When Ella Fitzgerald came to town to perform, she would bring her gentleman friends to the store and say “Suit ‘em up Donny!” Jacobson & Co. became a gathering place for people from all walks of life (from politicians to celebrities to gangsters), especially after the store expanded, moving to E. 9Th and short Vincent next to the Theatrical.
In the early 1980’s, Don was lured away from the clothing business to become a financial advisor at Prescott, Ball and Turban which eventually became Wells Fargo Advisors. His people skills as a salesman and financial acumen transferred well and led to a very successful second career. He was passionate about his work guiding his clients, retiring at 85 years young.
Don was a pillar in his community, serving leadership roles at the Cleveland Growth Association, Jewish Federation of Cleveland and Jewish Family Services Association, among others. He served a term as president of the board at Suburban Temple – Kol Ami. His charitable work consumed many hours which he gave generously and selflessly. Don was a financial advisor for many of these organizations and supported many other causes in the community and beyond.
Don met the love of his life, Judy Gardner, in August of 1956, after a date arranged by their fathers, Harry and Jerry. They were engaged after three weeks and wed on December 23rd. Judy and Don enjoyed 65 incredible years together. They had many, many close friends, including co-members of Oakwood Club. Don could often be found on the golf course or having lunch with the guys in the grill. Judy and Don travelled extensively, including treating his children and grandchildren to family trips nearby and abroad.
The most important cause of his life was the well-being and happiness of his family. He considered many friends and his children’s friends to be family as well and took wonderful care of them all. Of course, he adored his children – Jill Jacobson, Peggy Sugerman (David), Peter Jacobson (Lari Anderson Jacobson), but his true treasures in life were his seven grandchildren – Brett Huettner (Ashley Peters), Jesse Huettner, Simon Sugerman (Rachel Frederickson), Eli Sugerman, Gabe Sugerman, Jonas Jacobson and Sadie Jacobson, and his great-granddaughter, Audrey Almeda. He was a regular at their school events, even coaching soccer from the sidelines. He was often the first one they would call for advice. “Gramps” saw their individual strengths and encouraged them to follow their passions.
Don was a larger than life individual, always dressed impeccably, and his presence will be missed by many.
