Herbert grew up in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston and graduated with honors from Boston English High School, the 2nd oldest public school in the United States. He attended Northeastern University for engineering and upon graduation was hired by the Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory at The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), an independent government agency reporting directly to the President. His contributions to NACA (which in 1958 incorporated into NASA) were instrumental in the success of the Apollo mission, among other achievements in the human space program.
Services will be private, with interment at Ridge Road Cemetery.
