Joel is survived by his adored life partner and wife, Jeri E Chaikin, daughter Leah Claire Chaikin Newman, sister A. Marcy Newman (Chuck Biller), cousins, nieces and nephews, and an abundance of friends.
A 1963 graduate of Shaker Heights High School and a 1967 graduate of Dartmouth College, Joel enlisted in the US Army from 1967 – 1969 and served as a First Lieutenant in Saigon, South Vietnam where he programmed the computers for the Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV).
He attended the University of Michigan Law School (Go Blue!) and received his JD in 1972, joining his father in the practice of law. Joel learned to fly in his beloved Piper Cherokee. He was a flight instructor, ski instructor and a proud Past Master of the University Heights Masonic Lodge.
He enjoyed photography, scuba diving, and beer! During the summer, he could be found at Edgewater Yacht Club, where he crewed for friends and sailed his own boat, Renegade.
We will forever miss his energy, intellect, sense of humor, generosity, fabulous cooking, and of course, that mustache!
Special thanks to Arden Courts Memory Care Community and Miracle City Hospice and much love to Judi Lauer and Diana Roldan who provided Joel with the best possible care and companionship in the last phase of his life.
