I write to include my condolences among the scores of other heartfelt messages that have been sent your way.  That two Hawken sweethearts during my years at the School eventually married and raised such a promising young man will be a positive memory for me at the same time as I acknowledge, with sadness, this profound loss for the Weil and Smith families.  Shirley, my wife, has sent an e-card to Gretchen, her lifelong friend.  They were bridesmaids in the late 1950's at the wedding of my cousin (a Conn. College classmate of Gretchen and high school friend of Shirley).  We were in Cleveland last weekend for the Hawken Centennial events.  The genuine recollections of Josh, his positive persona, and his accomplishments were heard and felt by many.  Our thoughts are with both of you.

Dear Family of Joshua,
         You do not know us but we also loss a son at the young age of 20 years old. We know their are no words to express the rip in your hearts and the sadness you feel. Our prayers will be with you from this day forward to ask our God to comfort you and hold you close. We struggle to make sense of any loss but especially when it is our precious child with his life waiting to be lived fully. We know first-hand how it will seem you are in a "battle" as you deal with each new day as you deal with the emotional roller coaster of grief. As parents with children that have gone before us, we have the honor to carry on the lasting memories of their precious lives. We now become "caretakers" of ourselves to honor their memory in living our lives well. We need to give our broken hearts and cast our burden of sorrows to God because He does care for us...Psalms 55:22. It will be difficult to think of Joshua as "gone" when you carry so many fond memories of him. You need only close your eyes and you can see Joshua's big and friendly smile. Embrace all that you hold dear between you and Joshua, and you are the ones that gets to control what you hold as a memory. Your memories of Joshua are treasures no one can steal. We are told that "Love gives more than death can take" but loosing a son who's loved very much is the hardest thing we have to face. I'm sure Joshua enriched lives time can never erase. So I hope you are able to dwell on the love and warm thoughts of all you shared with Joshua and may it bring you peace for the days ahead. We do send our heartfelt sympathy and we encourage you to do all you can to find a support system of people willing to allow you be "real" in your grief and not judge your "coping" means of dealing with the days ahead. I have learned a lot about life since John's tragic passing twenty six years ago. When I feel sad, I think; "What would John want me to do?" I call a friend or reach out to someone that may be in the beginning of their grief journey. Allow yourself to have the healthy grief and invite friends to walk along side of you.

My heart goes out to you and your family.  My son passed away almost three years ago in a car accident.
