William “Bill” Hartstein was born on September 11, 1937, in Geneva, Switzerland. He immigrated to the United States as an infant with his parents and siblings in 1939 living in Akron, Ohio, and Regina, Saskatchewan.
While attending The Ohio State University, Bill met Phyllis Weiss of Cleveland, Ohio. They were married for 60 years until her death in 2019. They shared a birthday, though a year apart. They enjoyed travel, theater, and being with their family and friends.
Bill graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in accounting and went on to become a Certified Public Accountant. He was also a dedicated educator, teaching the Becker CPA Review course for many years.
Deeply committed to his faith and community, Bill served in leadership roles at Taylor Road Synagogue, Warrensville Center Synagogue, and Cedar Sinai Synagogue, often acting as treasurer. He was a proud member of the Owatonna Knights of Pythias and the Jewish War Veterans.
Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife Phyllis; his son Steven Hartstein; his parents Rabbi Avrum and Devorah Hartstein; his brother Michel Hartstein; his sisters Serita Resnik and Kathy (Yosil) Rosenzweig; and his brother-in-law Robert Liberles.
He is survived by his son Jonathan (Agnes) Hartstein; daughter-in-law Debbie Hartstein; his brother Hank (Judy) Hartstein; sister-in-law Adina Liberles; brothers-in-law Avi (Debbie) Weiss and Norm Resnik. Cherished grandfather of Andrew Hartstein, Gabrielle Hartstein, Aleeza (Elisha) Gerson, Ariella Hartstein, and Chana Orli Hartstein; and the proud great-grandfather of Moriah Zahava Gerson. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews and dear friend, Ina White.
Bill will be remembered for his integrity, generosity, and unwavering dedication to family, community, and faith.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025 at 10AM at Berkowitz Kumin and Bookatz Memorial Chapel. Interment will be at Mount Olive Cemetery Solon, OH.
