Avis Teresa Virola Sanchez

Avis Teresa Sanchez (née Virola), age 77, dearly beloved wife of 55 years to Luis F., devoted mother to Isabel Sanchez (Thomas) Cummings and Gil, loving grandmother of Tristan Sanchez, dear sister of Angelo (Frances, deceased) Virola, Pedro (deceased), Maria (deceased), dear aunt, niece, cousin and friend to many.

Avis was a remarkable woman and had a storied career. She was proud of her AfroLatina Puerto Rican Heritage. She was passionate about social work, social justice, advocacy and activism. She was a foundress and executive director of the Hijos de Borinquen Spanish American Center for over 30 years. During that time, she served tens of thousands of people and provided over 35,000 service units, by herself. Her life was service and she dedicated herself to social welfare, her culture, her community and her family.

Visitation Friday, March 17, 2023 from 4-8pm at Craciun Berry Funeral Home, 7200 Detroit Avenue, Cleveland, OH, 44102. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 10:00am at St. Vitus Catholic Church, 6019 Lausche Avenue, Cleveland, OH, 44103. Please meet at St. Vitus for the mass.
