Florida J. Mackie, age 92, of Brunswick, Ohio, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026. Born on April 9, 1933, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the beloved daughter of the late Glennon and Jennie (Creamo) O’Bannon and a longtime resident of Cleveland, a community she dearly loved and tirelessly supported.
Florida was the wife of the late Eugene Schmick. She was a proud and loving mother to Florida Harte (deceased), Eugene Schmick, Karen Thompson (Rick), Linda Best (Tim, deceased), and Mark Schmick (Linda). Her greatest joy was her family, and she treasured every moment spent as a grandmother to Tonya, Lee, Mitchell, Jacob, Rachel, and Brandon, and as a great-grandmother. She was also a cherished sister, aunt, and a dear friend to many.
A true self-made woman, Florida built her life through hard work, determination, and independence. She owned and operated Mackie Auto Title, worked as a trusted tax preparer, and owned several rental properties. Her work ethic and resilience were an inspiration to all who knew her.
Florida had a gift for baking and cooking and was lovingly known as the “Cookie Lady.” She was famous for her pies, cakes, Christmas cookies, and intricate gingerbread houses, all made with care and shared with love. Her kitchen was the heart of family gatherings, where big dinners brought everyone together and created memories that will be cherished forever.
Always happy, laughing, and full of love for everyone, Florida was a natural connector who brought people together. She organized many neighborhood block parties and was deeply devoted to her community, serving as a passionate neighborhood advocate and taking an active role in local political matters and neighborhood improvement efforts. She found great joy in gardening, lovingly tending to her flowers and hostas, and keeping her yard in impeccable condition—a reflection of the pride she took in her home and neighborhood.
Florida will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, strength, and joyful spirit. Her laughter, kindness, and unwavering love for her family, friends, and community leave a legacy that will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
In accordance with her wishes, all services will be private. Donations in Florida’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
