George H. Dennison, Jr., age 73 (3/29/1943), joined his Grandfather in the Sky on 8/20/2016. George was extremely proud of being 100% Navajo and of his father's receiving the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor for being one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers of WWII. He was raised on the Navajo Reservation at Fort Defiance, Arizona, graduating from Fort Window Rock High School where he was an outstanding football player and broke many school records. Relocated by the government to Cleveland, Ohio he attended Dyke College and received an Associate's Degree in accounting. Soon after, he was drafted and headed to Vietnam where he experienced the horrors of war and the long lasting effects of Agent Orange, serving in the Artillery Unit (1967-68). He became a proud Vietnam Vet.
After the war, he married and had four children. His first wife passed away. George worked 27 years for the William Patrick Day Early Childhood Center and then 8 years at the Jane Edna Hunter Bldg, retiring with 35 years at Cuyahoga County Human Services.
George met his kindred spirit, Daline R. Lance, and they were joyfully married in 2009. He led a full, cheerful, humble life, active in the VFW, being Post Commander 2850 for five years. In 2006, his post won the National Community Award. He was also Chaplain, Junior Vice, Senior Vice, and District 7 Commander (2009-2010). At State, George was Officer of the Day, Assistant Guard and Guard (2010- 2016). With the Military Order of the Cootie, he was Pup Tent Seam Squirrel 5 consecutive years, was in the Grand of Ohio as Junior Grand Vice and Senior Grand Vice and was looking forward to being Grand Commander of the state next year. With his heart of gold, he was Hospital/MIA/POW Chairperson for the Cooties and the VFW.
George was a member in Honor Flight of Cleveland, Polish Legion of American Vets, Vietnam Veterans of America, and the Rittman National Cemetery Honor Guard. He was life member of VFW Past Commanders Association, VFW National Home for Children, Disabled American Vets, the North American Iroquois Veterans Association, the American Legion, and VFW Gold Legacy, being it's first member from Ohio.
George enjoyed life to the utmost and had a heart for others. He was involved with the Special Olympics, the Soap Box Derby and was a time keeper for youth swimming events. He loved attending tag and estate sales with his wife, going to Pow Wows together, feeding the birds and squirrels at home, watching the other wild animals that came into their yard and listening to Native American and other music. He loved to travel the USA with Daline. His sense of humor kept everyone in laughter and smiles, but also had a very serious side... a real treasure of a person.
He was the beloved husband of wife, Daline; devoted father to his children Tina Marie (Craig, deceased), Lana, Tara (Sam) and Todd (Lindsey); loving Grandpa to his grandchildren Ladina (Adrian), Leah, Mya, Diego, Amira, Hayden, Todd Jr, Aaron, Tiffany, Deanna and Leanna; and great grandchildren Anthony and Asianna; and dear brother to Lorraine and deceased siblings, Sylvia, Ben, and Julia; dear son of deceased parents, Grace and George Dennison; and honored Uncle to many nieces and nephews; wonderful friend to everyone.
