JC was a very hard worker at a very young age working in the fields alongside his mother picking cotton.
Once JC graduated from high school he eventually moved away from the South to Indianapolis Indiana to find work. He became a great brick layer during the years. He later moved to Cleveland and found more work at various businesses. His last employment was at Gould where him and a few of his brothers worked together.
JC went to a many football games for his son Deshawnta who he was so proud of. Not only was he there faithfully for his son at all games but for all the other kids who did not have a dad to support them. He was loved by many.
JC was very happy when Barack Obama became president. He had pictures and books of Barack all throughout his house.
JC departed this life on November 6, 2025 at Euclid Hospital in ICU. He fought a long battle after his diagnosis of cancer back in 2022. He tried to stay as strong as he could but he got weaker and weaker as time went on. He lived his last few months in Grande pointe nursing home alongside his brother Andrew. JC could be a very thoughtful and caring person to others. If he knew someone was sick, in a nursing home, he would visit them faithfully. He attended everyone funeral he knew as he has many, many obituaries as proof.
JC leaves to mourn two children Deshawn Boyland (Autumn)of Ohio and Carmella James (Lee) of Kennesaw Ga; three siblings Andrew Harris (Jeanette) of Cleveland, Ohio, Dale Harris of Flint, Michigan and Gloria Dunn (Tyrone) of Cleveland Ohio. He also has one loving, kind honorary brother Nick Hodge (Barbara) of Cleveland Ohio; one granddaughter, Zealeeyah Patterson of Kennesaw, Ga; two grandsons, Deshawnta and Deion Boyland of Ohio; one great grandson, Houston Jaice Jackson of Kennesaw, Ga and a host of nieces, (one special niece Sharonda Mason who has been there for him through it all) nephews, cousins and many friends.
JC was preceded in death by his parents Mary Mason and Sherman Boyland, one sister, Jessie Bea Maclin two brothers, Freddie and Chester Hodge.
You will be missed by many. Rest in peace.
