Joseph Roosevelt Whitthorne, Jr.
was born May 17, 1962 in East Cleveland, Ohio to the Late Dr. Joseph Roosevelt Whitthorne, Sr and Dr. Sylvia Ann Whitthorne. He was the second child and first son out of their four children. Joseph, Jr. was educated in the East Cleveland Public School system. Joe as he was affectionately called was on the Shaw Cardinal Football and Wrestling teams, he placed second in the State of Ohio, in wrestling. He was a 1980 graduate of Shaw High School.
Joseph Jr. excepted Christ at an early age and was a founding member of Rehoboth Temple Church of God In Christ under the leadership of his dad. It was under his tutelage that he accepted his call to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Under the leadership of Pastor Traci D. Whitthorne, in addition to preaching the gospel, he served on the Board of Trustee, Director of Buildings and Grounds, and the Director of The Men’s Fellowship. His last appointment was the charge to oversee one of the Care Cell Groups along with his wife Jeamika.
Joe had a love for music and was an awesome musician. As early as the age of two, he could be found playing the kitchen chairs as drums with two butter knives or anything that could be used as “sticks”. Joe had a passion particularly for percussion instruments, he started with the bongos, then congas, on to a full set of drums...he had the distinct honor of being Rehoboth’s first musician. Another passion of Joe’s was cooking...and he could really cook. “Soul Food” was always a treat at his house. Some of his specialties were Macaroni and Cheese, Roast, Dressing, Fried Corn to just name a few.
Joseph, Jr. had an extensive work history that spans over forty years. He held his first job at fourteen.
He was blessed to have his” Uncle Ralph”, in his life who taught him all kinds of trade work, from plumbing to working on cars. It was with this knowledge he was able to land all types of jobs. He was looked upon by many to provide his vast knowledge and craftsmanship to several home projects and small renovations including bathrooms, kitchens, drywalling, deck building and plumbing.
It was while working at Swagelok in 2003, that he met the love of his life Jeamika Hill. With his charming personality he pursued Jeamika for quite some time. His votaress demeanor was not flattering to Jeamika. She was very reserved and shy but always courteous to him. This would go on for a couple of years. He was wearing her down. They became best friends and the rest is history. They were married on May 21, 2015.
He loved to travel visiting places that he never imagined he would. Joe Jr. had a passion to go and would plan a trip in a moment. The last trip he traveled was to Myrtle Beach to celebrate his birthday. He planned on residing in Tampa Florida. Joe Jr retired at age 53 from Swagelok, it wasn’t long after his retirement that he and his wife started the J and J Carpet Cleaning Company.
Junior was a kind and generous man. He was compassionate in nature and willing to get in where he fit in. His heart was gentle and loving never meeting a stranger, he was the life of the party never a quiet moment. His laugh alone would greet you before you reached him. His joking and laughter wasn’t a sign of weakness, he was assertive as well as firm and would speak his mind if provoked.
Of all his hobbies and past time activities, Junior enjoyed every moment he spent with family and friends. Especially the game nights playing his favorite card game Uno he swore he was the “Lebron James” of.
He was proud to be a father and was grateful for their mothers (Jvette Green-Swift, Denise Evans and Barbara Carthon) for giving him such gifts that formed his blended family. He could be found many days talking about all six of his children and how he was thankful to God that they were all doing so well.
