Ronald (affectionately known as Pompey) was born in Cleveland Ohio on November 4, 1938 to Thomas P Shelton and Alma O Green (both deceased). His two younger brothers, Clarence (Pete) and Theodore (Ted) preceded him in death.
Ronald was a graduate of East Technical High School (class of 1957). He proudly served in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Senior Master Sargent, in the Vietnam War
He married Brenda Exum on December 1, 1972. After 49 years of marriage, and a debilitating illness, Brenda preceded him in death on February 21, 2021.
Ronald and Brenda were faithful members of Central Christian Church. While attending, Ronald was first appointed deacon, and was later ordained as an elder by Pastor Janice Hannah-Hardy. He was the chairman of the board for over 20 years. He kept a list of birthdays of members of the church, and sent birthday cards every year. The members loved his wisdom and thoughtfulness.
In his spare time, he loved jazz music, particularly Miles Davis and Jimmy Smith. He loved the Cleveland Indians/Guardians, and also loved basketball and bowling.
While he had no children of his own, his nieces and nephews have fond memories of trips with Uncle Pompey to see the Blue Angels Air Show.
Ronald was “The Rock” of the family. Always there to do whatever was needed, throughout the extended illnesses of his wife, his mother, and both of his younger brothers. He always put the needs of others ahead of his own. Having stood strong until the last of his younger brothers passed away earlier this year, Ronald ultimately succumbed to congestive heart failure and kidney disease. We believe that as a good soldier he felt it was his duty. He could not leave his post on this earth, until everyone else before him was safe in the hands of the Lord!
The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care and compassion of the nursing staff at Menorah Park Friedman Pavilion Unit 1. We will be forever grateful.
Ronald’s ashes will be placed in a niche, next to his beloved wife Brenda, at Lake View Cemetery.
Stand down now soldier… Well done!
