Margaret Perry Christensen, 79, beloved wife of Roy Christensen of Clinton passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on March 30 after a brief illness. Margaret was born in New Haven on May 26, 1938 to Gordon and Christine Perry. She graduated from Hillhouse High School, where she was designated “most athletic” and was also the unofficial class clown. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from New Haven State Teachers College and was awarded the college’s first PEGA (Physical Education Graduate Association) award upon graduation in 1960. Margaret taught physical education at Hamden Hall Day School for several years.
She married Roy Christensen in 1962 and raised their family in Old Saybrook, later moving to Westbrook. Margaret was an avid golfer and won many awards in the Women’s League at Clinton Country Club. She was a fierce crossword conqueror and enjoyed completing several puzzles each day. She was a lover of winters in Florida, fishing, the ocean, osprey, the salt marshes, Hershey kisses, family games, and golden retrievers. Margaret had a quick wit and brought smiles to many with her “spunky” personality.
Besides her husband Roy, Margaret is survived by her daughter Stacy Christensen-Veley and her husband Jaye of Wethersfield, and her beloved grandsons Jayson and Tate Veley, whom she was extremely proud of; her daughter Sharyn Von Ogden of Westbrook and her husband John; and her son Todd Christensen of Middletown, Rhode Island and his girlfriend Lori. She also leaves behind her cherished “Twin B,” Janet Marshall of Hingham Massachusetts, her brother Gordon Perry of Barrington, RI, and her sister Gwen Moffitt Creaser of Madison, two sisters-in-laws, Gloria and Judy Christensen, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful PCTs, RNs, APRNs, and social workers at Middlesex Hospice who took the time to listen and care during this challenging time, as well as extend a special heartfelt thank you to Mary Ellen and Lubi for their amazing compassion and assistance these past few weeks.
Funeral services are Friday at 11am at Westbrook Congregational Church, Westbrook. Calling hours are Thursday from 4pm-7pm at Swan Funeral Home, Clinton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Margaret’s name may be sent to either the Westbrook Congregational Church or the Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue, P.O Box 808, Hudson MA, 01749.
