Glenn Robert Davis, age 71, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2021 in Clinton Township, Michigan. Glenn was the beloved husband of Pamela for almost 50 years. He was much loved by his sister-in-laws, Debra Hampson and Laura Evett, as well as two nephews, Ryan and Sean Hampson. Glenn was also honorary Uncle Glenn to his best friend’s, Gary Terenzi, children and grandchildren.
Glenn was born on June 26, 1949, the hottest day of the year, to his parents, Robert and Dorothy Davis (nee: Romatz). He was an only child and for ten years they were a very happy threesome, traveling to upper Michigan annually as well as taking trips to New York, Williamsburg, Florida and many other destinations. Glenn’s dad passed away when Glenn was 10 yrs. old and his mom continued to raise him to become a wonderful, witty, handsome and loving man. She was a remarkable woman and Glenn was a remarkable man.
Glenn met Gary when they were seven years old. They became childhood best friends and over the years thought of each other more as brothers. They played on the same baseball team as children and adults and their close friendship has lasted 65 years. Gary’s family has been a huge part of Glenn’s and Pam’s life. He is honorary Uncle Glenn to Gary’s children, Jef, Tim and Anthony and their wonderful families. They are also Jef’s godparents.
Glenn and Pam met at Lakeshore High School in 11th grade. She had just moved to the new school and they became friends shortly thereafter. Although they never dated in high school, they did double-date to the senior prom, each with another partner. They graduated in 1967 and exchanged letters while attending college. Glenn’s time at MSU held some of his best memories. While writing they soon realized the friendship had grown into something more. Their first date was at Luigi’s Restaurant. The rest is history.
Glenn began working at Fruehauf Trailers in 1969. Over the years he rose within the company and became a Regional Manager, traveling to Fruehauf locations all over the Midwest. He left Fruehauf just shy of 30 years to become Vice President of Construction for a subsidiary of Chateau Communities, NCD. He felt his years at Chateau were some of his best years.
Pam’s family embraced Glenn wholeheartedly. Her parents loved him dearly and her sisters, Debra Hampson and Laura Evett think of him as their brother. Debra’s sons, Ryan and Sean Hampson, were especially close to their godfather and uncle. Everyone has many, many fun memories. Laughter has always been a part of Glenn’s life and he just made every family get-together fun. Laughing until your stomach hurt was not unheard of when Glenn was around.
Glenn and Pam were married on May 15th, 1971. They were each other’s best friend and Pam has always referred to Glenn as the “Love of her Life”. They were never blessed with children but the many wonderful memories they shared as man and wife, for just shy of 50 yrs., are a comfort to her. They were devoted to each other and as Pam’s dear friend, Gina Lombardo, said, “He is your Happy Place”. She was right. All Pam needed was to be with Glenn and she was happy.
In the 80s they owned a cottage on MacDonald Island, located on the middle channel. They spent many months as weekend warriors, only closing up when the cold weather started to limit their activities. They’d leave work on Friday for a ferry ride to Harsen’s Island, followed by their boat (splash dance) ride to their place and then return home on Sunday night. The weekends were amazing and fun-filled with water skiing, playing cards, bonfires, horseshoes, ping pong, floating down the river on inner tubes, fishing, leisurely boat rides and more. They thoroughly enjoyed having family & friends visit, especially the Terenzi boys and Ryan and Sean.
They sold their cottage in the early 90s and bought a 34 ft. SeaRay considering t their floating cottage. Glenn named the boat “No Mow” because he was so grateful to no longer have to cut their large piece of property every Friday. In fact, the name won a SeaRay award.
They became members of BBYC and soon became part of the “Rat Pack”. The memories of those years of boating were some of their fondest. Taking their nephews to Cedar Point for a few days by boat along with trips to Mackinaw and Bayfield, Ontario which were two of their favorite harbors. Trips with the Rat Pack were always lively and filled with laughter and the Hutto Hummer was always a welcome treat. Although none of the Rat Pack are boaters now, they remain very close. Glenn’s witty comments at the get-togethers will be missed.
Glenn enjoyed bowling most of his life, many years on a team with Gary and godson, Jef. He also played softball for many years, only quitting when his hip slowed him down. In the early years of their marriage they traveled to Florida and Maine and they loved Mount Rushmore. Long bike rides were enjoyed. After retiring they began taking annual trips out west, primarily Scottsdale, AZ or Rancho Mirage, CA and Cancun. They also enjoyed the history and sights at Williamsburg, vacationing there every few years. They had honeymooned in Mackinac and took annual trips up north. They enjoyed the annual Mackinaw Bridge walk for close to 25 yrs. In fifty years they only missed one year of visiting the area.
Glenn will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was one of a kind. His smile was contagious and his epic wit was mind boggling. He was so quick to come up with something funny it was amazing. He was a kind, generous and loving man.
As a result of covid restrictions currently in place a Celebration of Life and Love will be held for family and close friends only on Saturday, May 15th at Mirage Banquet Hall.
Donations may be made in Glenn's memory to the Salvation Army.
