Born on May 25, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, Joanne was the youngest of three daughters born to Joseph and Giovanina (née Didea) Guarino. She was educated in Catholic schools through high school, a foundation that shaped her life and faith. Joanne remained devoted to her beliefs throughout her life and was a longtime member of St. Lawrence Catholic Parish.
On August 30, 1969, Joanne married the love of her life, Johnny Valvano, at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Eastpointe. Together, they shared many wonderful years of marriage and raised two daughters.
Joanne dedicated over 50 years of her life working as a dog groomer, a profession that reflected her deep love for animals. Outside of work, she enjoyed playing bingo, visiting the casino to play the slots, and spending time playing cards and board games. She had a deep appreciation for music, especially oldies, and found joy in the simple pleasures of life.
Above all, Joanne cherished her family. She was known as a magnificent cook and baker, especially when it came to preparing Italian meals that brought everyone together. She held a deep respect for her elders and always went out of her way to make those around her feel loved and cared for.
Joanne is survived by her loving husband, Johnny Valvano; her daughters, Denise Marie McLean and Michelle Lee (Erica) Valvano; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Giovanina Guarino; and her sisters, Geraldine Brisley and Josephine Dehelean.
