Lina Marie Hedwig Luise Brattengeier was born on December 3rd, 1926 in Frankfurt, Germany. She was better known as Lucy, by her beloved Ralph Caldwell, and as Oma, by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She met the love of her life, or as we know him, Opa, while he was stationed in Germany following the war. They had 3 children, Rolf, Denise and Corinne and lived in various States as Opa made a carrier in the Army and she made a career in taking care of her family. They settled down in Michigan in their later years and were actively involved in helping to raise their grandchildren Michelle, Christopher, Rachel and Holly. There was nothing more important to Oma and Opa than their family. They loved their children, grandchildren and many great-children dearly and could always be counted on to help however they could.
To describe Lucy, she was a fighter – it started at a young age when she had Scarlet Fever and even when others gave up on her, she learned the importance of fighting for what is really important in life, especially when she felt very strongly on an issue. She was fiercely loyal to her family and friends and those who crossed her path quickly learned the wrath of Lucy. She knew the importance of giving and could always be counted on to offer a helping hand to those in need. Always having manners and looking your best were very important to her. She had a great sense of humour and would make others laugh with her.
Over the past 12 years in battling with as she would call it “The Alzheimers” she showed us the importance of life and had a strong will to survive. She always had a smile on her face to share with everyone around her. She loved to share stories about growing up in Germany and her life with her beloved Opa, who she is now with once again.
We will miss you Oma, but we will cherish the wonderful memories we had with you and are grateful for the time we had you in our lives. We learned so much from you and hope to continue your legacy for many years to come.
