Sherwood John Wolfe

Sherwood John Wolfe was born on June 25, 1929 in Rockford, Illinois to Allen Wolfe and Mildred Wolfe (Hoglund). He passed away in his home in Clovis, California on February 9, 2023 with his family by his side.

Sherwood graduated high school in 1947. In 1950, he joined the US Air Force Band. He was stationed in Germany from 1950-1954. He advanced from playing the trumpet to being the Drum Major.

In 1955, he married Elfriede Heep and moved to Marquette, Michigan becoming an inspector with the Corps of Engineers. Their first two children (Helen (1957) and Karl (1958)) were born during this time.

The family moved to Fresno, California in 1962 where their last 2 children (Laura (1962) and Daryl (1968)) were born. It was at this time Sherwood accepted a job with the U.S. Postal Service in Clovis where he remained for 26 years.

Sherwood was born in the generation of the Greatest. This was not seen more clearly in him than through his strong work ethic. Because of his lifelong passion for music, he had an opportunity to supplement his income by joining a Big Band dance band. The musicians in this band played Polka, Waltz, Fox Trot, Jitterbug, and Swing with Sherwood playing the trumpet. He also was a member of the Musicians Union.

Sherwood displayed an array of skills and hobbies. Extremely handy, he took care of ALL the home maintenance necessities. He enjoyed fishing, woodcraft, leathercraft, and writing poetry.

Sherwood took an early retirement at the age of 56, acquiring an Airstream and camping with his beloved wife. As it turned out, Sherwood was retired longer than he worked for the Postal Service.

During his lifetime he received Department of the Army Certificate of Training and Certificate of Service and also the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Journeyman Certificate.

Sherwood was preceded in death by his wife Elfriede Wolfe.

He is survived by his 4 children, Helen Wolfe-Visnick, Karl Wolfe, Laura Bahri and Daryl Wolfe.
