
Charles Lee Zander was born in Omaha, Nebraska on November 23, 1938. He
died in Cocoa, Florida on May 20, 2012. He was the son ofAnton and Bess Zander
and grew up in Craig and later Herman, Nebraska. He graduated from Herman High
School where he lettered all four years in basketball and track. He graduated from
the University of Nebraska with honors.
Charles had two careers. The first was in the United States Army for twenty-
three years. He enlisted in the Army during his senior year of high school and was
sent immediately to Korea. After nine years of enlisted service, he earned his
officer's commission and served in combat in Vietnam. He retired as a Major and his
personal decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army
Commendation Medal, and three Good Conduct Medals. Charles second career
was as an engineer at the Kennedy Space Center. He received several citations for
his professional achievements and leadership in the Space Shuttle Program.
Charles never forgot where he came from or those who loved him. He
returned to Nebraska many times for reunions, football games, and to visit friends
and family. He was a loyal patriot and a loving patriarch. He is survived by his wife
Ellen, his children Jeffrey, Tracey, and Jennifer,as well as fifteen grandchildren and
one great-grandchild.
