"Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness." -Proverbs 31:25-26. You cannot begin to describe Helen Glenn without first evoking the word of God because she was a mighty woman of God, filled with wisdom and kindness and a beautiful love for Jesus that many aspire to, but few ever achieve. Helen had many nicknames given to her during her 98 years on this earth; Gorgey, Hannie, but her favorite was Grammie.
Helen Jeanne Sommer Glenn was born to Arville and Edith Sommer on October 29, 1922, amongst the rolling hills and rich farmlands of Southside, West Virginia. She grew up on her beloved family farm with her siblings Wilmarose Sebrell, J.E. Sommer, George Charles Sommer, Arville Edward Sommer Jr., and Anna Belle Suerken. On August 2, 1941, Helen married her high school sweetheart, Talmage "Sam" "Poppy" Glenn and with him she raised four beautiful children Cyndee, Sam, Mark, and Luke. She earned a master's degree in education and devoted her life to enriching the lives of every child who had the pleasure of being her student. In addition, she was a member of many professional teachers' organizations. As an assistant principal at Imperial Estates Elementary School, she continued to better the lives of every child in her sphere of influence, until she retired in the 1980's.
Helen loved music and played the piano and sang in her church choir. Throughout her life she was well known in whatever community she lived in by her never-ending commitment to serving God and in turn caring for others. She also loved nature and you could often find her exploring the yard looking for interesting flora and fauna to collect exclaiming, "Nature is the best thing in the whole wide world to be entertained by! Nature is God made!"
Her name cannot be mentioned without smiles and warm memories for all who knew her and had the joy of experiencing her influence over their lives. Ever dedicated to her family, Helen hosted every holiday gathering, with her famous rolls being the main attraction of every special meal. She loved to go shopping with her family and friends, always looked forward to long lunches and lazy afternoons working puzzles with anyone who would stop by for a visit.
Helen lived a long happy life, witnessing the Great Depression, a World War, and a new millennium and through it all, her spirit remained bright, kind, and never wavered from the truth of God and His word. She always had her bible open and never tired of learning and always ready to have a conversation about Jesus, who was truly the love of her life.
On Monday, February 8, 2021 Helen Glenn fell asleep on her couch and peacefully drifted into heaven, surrounded by a house full of photographs and memories of a life well lived. Helen was preceded in death by her husband Talmage (Sam) and daughter Cyndee. She is survived by her three sons, Sam (wife Tracy), Mark (wife Marilou), and Luke (wife Kimberly). One of her greatest earthly loves was her grandchildren; April Jeanne de Luis, Lync Price, Nathan Glenn, Helen "Hannie" Glenn, Garnet Rose Glenn, Mark Glenn Jr., and great grandchildren, Elijah Ziegler, Madeline Skye Parris, Emmy Carroll, Carolyn Glenn, with two more due this year from Nathan and Mark Jr. She is also survived by one sister, Anna Belle Suerken of Plain City, Ohio along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family who loved her dearly.
