Mary Louise Battle passed away peacefully on September 24, 2018. Born January 7th, 1938 in West Point, Georgia to Ennis Mathes and Francis Philpott. Mary was the third of six siblings. Growing up in West Point, she attended Harrison High School where she was the Valedictorian of the Class of 1957. She later moved to Atlanta, Georgia to attend Morris Brown College where she studied Accounting.
On March 13th, 1964 Mary Louise Mathes married Marion Henry Battle and they raised their children in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout her life, Mary instilled the importance of God and church with her children and grandchildren. She taught Sunday school for over 30 years and helped organize Easter speeches, Christmas speeches, and oratorical contests through the church. Mary believed in hard work and commitment, work- ing with the Internal Revenue Service for 37 years before retiring in 2004. Upon retirement, Mary enjoyed volunteering with various service organizations, serving Christ through her church, and spending time with her family. Mary showed love through food and it was tradition for the family to gather at her home on Sunday afternoon for fellowship and a delicious home cooked meal.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Marion Henry Battle, her beloved son Dr. Michael Stewart Bailey, and her siblings, Calvin Mathes, Jimmy Mathes, and Alfred Mathes. She leaves behind five children: Victor, Marion (Julia), Vincent (Nadine), Orlando Sr., and Genevra; two siblings: Eddie Mathes (Pat) and Annie Early; eleven grandchildren: Kimberly (Curtis), Talisa (Joey), Julia (Erie), Orlando Jr. (Erica), Mario, Khalil, Drake, Elise, Cameron, Quincy, and Christian; nine great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loved ones, and dear friends.
