Mildred Brown a.k.a “Milly” was born on July 30, 1955, to the late Bessie Harmon-Jones and Elmore Brown in Oglethorpe, Georgia. She moved to New Jersey to attend school and live with her Aunt Delsie until her mother moved to New Jersey from Georgia. Mildred attended and graduated Maple Avenue Elementary School, Weequahic High School, and Morris Brown College. After spending several years in GA, where she birthed her beautiful daughter Tamika, she hopped in her Camero and drove to New Jersey to be with her mom Bessie. Newark became the place where she became an established entrepreneur opening her first corner store “M & T Food Giant”. Mildred was full of life and always had a smile on her face. She had a genuine heart and loved people. Everyone in the neighborhood loved “Ms. Mildred”. She is considered a pillar and matriarch of the Maple and Chancellor community. Her friends and family always looked to her for advice, a helping hand, and a good party. She loved to travel, dance, and attend church, but most of all enjoyed being around her family and friends. She exemplified incredible faith and believed strongly in the power of prayer. The true definition of strength. Milly was also the kind of person that would let you know how she felt, she said exactly what was on her mind, and did things her own way. Always there to offer an encouraging word and a huge smile. Mildred bought love, light, and joy to everyone around with her big smile and vivacious laugh. Mildred was preceded in death by her mother Bessie Harmon-Jones and her sister Bessie “Vonne” Brown. She leaves to cherish her precious memories; her beautiful and gorgeous daughter Tamika; her granddaughter Mary Wiley; her nieces Mi’Caela, Madison, and Tiear; godchildren, Joshua, Kenyatta, Katerina, and Lashaundra; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Special mention to Chan’nel Johnson, Shameka Harmon, and Tiffani Stewart for all their help, standing in the gap, and being there whenever there was a need. Mommy, you will definitely be missed but will forever be in our hearts.
