Born November 15, 1930 to Robert Coleman Cain and Bruce Pryor Cain in the Adina Community, and was a lifelong resident of the state of Texas. He spent his early years going to a country school and working on a peanut farm with his family. It is there that Don learned a great work ethic that would serve him well in the future. He also attended public schools in Lexington and Elgin. At the early age of 18, Don began his career with Southern Pacific Railroad. Soon after, he married the love of his life, Joy Dunbar, and they embarked on a time of raising two daughters. They moved around to several Texas towns.
In 1960 his job with Southern Pacific brought them to the twin cities of Bryan/College Station. It was soon realized this is where they wanted to stay and raise their family. A lifelong friendship developed with Bob and Pat Spearman. From this friendship, a partnership began, and both men ventured into the homebuilding industry. With a driving desire for a career in real estate and investment, D.R. Cain Company was established. Later, Joe Courtney joined Don, and including home building, the company branched out to commercial, land development, and rental properties in the fast growing Bryan/ College Station area. From this came the development of “The Oaks” subdivision, Brazos Valley Concrete Company, Brazos Valley Lumber Yard, and several other projects.
Some of Don’s fondest memories were having barbeques on the grounds of the rental complexes that were occupied by many Aggie Students. He drew great satisfaction providing families with a home, especially their first home. He enjoyed tremendously the relationships he built over the years with the families he served. He was also involved with Habitat for Humanity and the B/CS Homebuilders Association. He was past member of the Jaycees and the Lions Club. He supported many community projects.
Don retired in 1997 after serving his community well through his career. He was a member of the First Christian Church throughout his life. Those who knew him best will remember him as a hardworking, generous, caring man. He cherished his family. He was happiest on his tractor and at the lake house with all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and Joy especially enjoyed hosting the annual Thanksgiving Holiday with extended family and anyone that needed a family to belong to.
