

Lawrence S. McGowan was born February 11, 1929 to Orr B. and Sarah B. McGowan in Ocheyedan, Iowa. He lived there and on a farm in Belmont, Iowa until May of 1942 when he moved to Hawthorne, Nevada. Larry attended Mineral County High School, graduating with an athletic scholarship to the University of Nevada. He was a two-time All Star Quarterback. Larry served in the United States Air Force from 1948 until 1952. He was an ASA All State Softball Catcher from 1949 to 1952. He played in six ASA World Championships. His love of sports continued in his later years where Larry won the Riverbend Country Club Senior Golf Champion six times. And Oh! How he hunted and fished!
Larry is survived by his sister-in-law Joan McGowan; and his children, Javy McGowan, James and Sandra McGowan, Lawrence II and Cheriol McGowan, Lori Melton, Rita and Bill Sturtevant, Terry and Ruth Ward, Reba and Walt Kellum, Perry and Lynn Ward, Renita and Mike Mundwiller. Larry answered to ‘Pop’, ‘Pawpaw’ and ‘Daddy Mac’ to 34 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, and was expecting the arrival of another great grandchild in April. He loved and was loved by many nieces and nephews as well as many friends.
