Berley Wade Bowen of Bedford, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025, at the age of 89. A man whose warmth, wit, and unwavering loyalty left a lasting impression on everyone he met, Berley’s life was one richly lived and deeply loved.
Born in Bowie, Texas on May 8, 1936, Berley grew up with a spirit of curiosity and determination that followed him throughout his life. He attended school in Arlington, graduating with the class of 1954. From a young age, Berley exhibited a strong love for family, community, and the outdoors — passions that would shape the man he became.
Those who knew Berley will remember him as a devoted father and proud sports enthusiast. There was rarely a game he missed, especially when it came to cheering on his children from the stands. An ardent fan of the Texas Longhorns, Berley wore his burnt orange with pride. If it was Longhorns football, baseball, softball, or basketball, he was watching — often from his favorite chair, with a steady stream of commentary and contagious enthusiasm. When sports took a break, Fox News filled the screen, keeping him informed and engaged with the world around him.
Berley was not only a spectator of life but an explorer of it. In his spare time, you could find him combing through fields and forgotten corners with his metal detector in hand, always in search of hidden treasures. His passion for discovery eventually led him to open his own metal detector shop in Arlington, Texas — a venture that not only showcased his entrepreneurial spirit but also earned him recognition in numerous newspaper articles and magazines for his remarkable finds and dedication to the hobby.
Professionally, Berley dedicated 33 years of service to Bell Helicopter, where his hard work and steady presence made a meaningful impact. Even in retirement, he never stopped moving, always finding joy in the simple things — a walk, a story, a new adventure.
Among his greatest joys were the animals who shared his life — especially his beloved 30-year-old parrot, Mags, and his constant companion, an eight-year-old Yorkie named Nickey, who rarely left his side. Their bond was a beautiful reflection of Berley’s gentle heart and steadfast loyalty.
But above all, Berley’s true legacy was the love he gave to his family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a friend whose presence brought comfort and joy. His laugh, his stories, his unwavering support — these are the gifts he leaves behind in the hearts of those who knew him best.
Berley is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Carolyn Bowen; his son Clint Bowen and wife Vicki; his daughter Lisa Resener and husband Greg; and his daughter-in-law Deanna Bates. He was a proud grandfather to Kendall Lytle and husband Rich, Kasi Bowen, Christian Bates and fiancé Nick, and a cherished great-grandfather to Nalani Lear, Paige Lytle, Pierce Lytle, and Tucker Judkins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Mary Bowen; his brother Curtis Bowen; sister-in-law Helen Bowen; son Steve Bates; grandson Brent Bates; mother-in-law Carol Cauthen; and Corine Bellamy Bowen, the mother of his children.
Berley’s presence in our lives was a blessing, and his absence leaves an ache in our hearts. But we find comfort in knowing that his legacy of love, laughter, and loyalty lives on through his family, his stories, and the many lives he touched.
Services for Berley will be held at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 5725 Colleyville Blvd. Colleyville, TX 76034. Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 17th, from 5-7 PM. A graveside service will occur the following day, June 18th, at 10 AM and will be followed by a reception held in Berley's honor.
