John Phillip Harris, of Colleyville, Texas, passed away on June 11, 2021 at the age of 69 following a long battle with cancer he fought with a positive attitude vowing never to give up. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas on December 31, 1951, a birthday he shared with his mother. John attended Texas Tech University and became a proud member of the Epsilon Phi Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity in 1972. John and Peggy Sue Harris met and married in Lubbock, Texas on August 22. 1981.
John had many passions in life, beginning with riding and showing Palomino horses across Texas and at the Fort Worth Stock Show. John always enjoyed the Stock Show and Rodeo at Will Rogers Coliseum over the years and Dickies Arena most recently. He was determined to attend the last performance of the last rodeo at Will Rogers in 2018 and attend the first rodeo in the new Dickies Arena in 2019.
Boats, planes and motorcycles were among some of John's many interests. Early years on Eagle Mountain Lake inspired his love of boating and he followed a long attraction for flying by learning to fly at Meacham Airfield in Fort Worth, Texas. John rode motorcycles for many years and was a member of the Harley Davidson HOG where he supported multiple Christmas Toy Rides despite the challenges of the Texas weather at the Christmas season.
John was also a long time member of USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association). John and a friend started the Lone Star Practical Shooters Club at Johnson County SSA in December 1998 and ran the monthly matches until recently.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Billy G. Harris and Maxine G. AbPlanalp Harris. He is survived by his wife, Peggy S. Harris and her son, James R. McComas, wife Mary Elizabeth and daughters Kendall and Katherine. John is also survived by his sisters, Sara Adams and Lee Anne (Mark) Ammons, John has three nieces, Melissa Adams, Sarah Ammons (Andrew) Pritzlaff, Caroline Ammons (Clayon) Scott and two nephews, Will and Jack Ammons. John's two great nephews and latest joys, George Scott and James Pritzlaff, were quick to put a smile on his face!
There will be a Memorial celebrating John on Saturday, July 31, 2021, 3:00 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
