Larry finished his Georgia school years after graduating from Sylvan High School in 1958. During those years he came an Eagle Scout, joining the ROTC, and developing a love for history and his country. His high school classmates always remembered him fondly for his love of dancing and his blue suede shoes. Cheering his brother's alma mater, he spent years as a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket fan and even worked as an usher during home games. Following high school, Larry attended Georgia State for one year but spent a great deal of that time in the pool hall honing his skills and jokingly answering phones with "Joe's Pool Hall, Larry Speaking".
In August of 1959, he enlisted in the Air Force and began work in the coding room. His years of service were filled with commendations and following his discharge, in August of 1963, he carried his skills over to the railroad telegraph department. Following his parents, Larry spent a long career of 40 years working as a train dispatcher for the L&N Railroad to CSX.
In 1970, Larry married his wife Kay after meeting her on a blind date earlier that year. Together they raised their daughter, Marjette, in Smyrna, Georgia over the next 20 years. In the winter of 1988, after their daughter was married, the railroad took Larry and Kay to Jacksonville, Florida where they made a new home within Christ Church and later Fruit Cove Baptist. During this time, they became grandparents welcoming Joshua Earl and Jessica Kay, named after her Mema Kay. As a proud grandfather, Larry spent many days entertaining his grandchildren with stories of his many adventures and playing marbles (aggravation). His joy was further expanded through Jessica and her husband, Alexei Chernikov, in welcoming his great grandchildren, Ada and Ames Quinton, who carry the Quinton name.
In the spring of 2022, Larry and Kay relocated to Texas to be closer to the grand and great grandchildren. By December of 2022, Larry's health took a turn and many felt that time was near, but God had another surprise in store. In April of 2023, he was introduced to his daughter, Margaret, and her husband, Kenny Husby, along with their four children, John, Jordan, Jenna, and Christian; including a bevy of great grandchildren who have traveled several times from Georgia to bond with this newfound relationship.
Over the past two decades, Larry came to understand just how much God loved him as he was given a new life, both spiritually and physically. His health over the last few years had declined but that only drew him closer to his Lord and Savior. As the spiritual head of his household on January 18th, he took his chaplain's hand and said that he had grown tired. On January 19th, Larry closed his eyes for the final time on earth to then open them before his Lord in Heaven on January 20th, 2024.
Larry is remembered for his sense of humor, his amazing "Uncle Larry Burgers" and his prayer and intercession for his family and friends. He blessed many of his friends and family with endearing nicknames and in return they named him a few of the following: Dday, Daddy Dimler, Banana Legs, Papa, LQ, Turkey Grinder, and LareBear. His greetings were always filled with animated gestures and silly voices that brought a smile to everyone who met him. "Whose making all that racket?!" A beloved farewell he always sent was, "MOOWAHH!"
Larry's funeral will take place on Sunday, January 28th, at 11 a.m. at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home 5725 Colleyville Blvd. Colleyville, TX 76034. He will be laid to rest at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery on Tuesday, January 30th, at 11 a.m. 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX. Anyone who wishes to be present at the cemetery should plan to arrive no later than 10:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers donations, made in Larry's honor, can be sent to Seamark Ranch, Paralyzed Veterans of America, or Larry and Kay's former church home, Fruit Cove Baptist Church.
