A loving Christian husband and father, he was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on March 11, 1940, to Ralph and Marie Heminger.
Mike is survived by his wife, Vicki; three daughters: Amy Orr (Kelley) of Kennedale, TX; Jane Vardiman of Euless, TX; and Leila Warren (Tyrone) of Lewisville, TX; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters: Sally Stone of Fort Wayne, IN and Marita Ryan (Tom) of Poughkeepsie, NY; one (twin) brother: Patrick Heminger (Janette) of Miami, FL; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
In a world of spotlight seekers, Mike was the ambient light in the room. He will be remembered as an easy-going and agreeable husband, father, and friend.
Married to the same woman for nearly 53 years while raising three more females has certainly earned Mike an eternity of happiness and peace. He was always eager to be helpful and supportive of his lifelong sweetheart. “Through thick and thin,” he would say, as their clothing sizes vacillated along with their paychecks. Mike would patiently and loyally sit with Vicki as he endured multiple annual viewings of “It’s a Wonderful Life.” He and Clarence will most likely be best buddies in the hereafter.
Mike’s major joy in life was being “papa” to his three daughters. For years he cherished coaching their baseball teams, while at the same time he never comprehended how quickly those same three athletes could deplete can after can of hairspray.
Being a grandpa and great-grandpa delighted him immensely. Watching his grands grow from toddlers to young adults was both humbling and an honor for him. He was always amazed by how quickly they aged while he remained “forever 39.”
Women, children and animals adored Mike; men respected him and enjoyed his companionship. God blessed him with a dry sense of humor and a gentle demeanor. His needs were simple and uncomplicated: he enjoyed a good meal, a gorgeous sunset, furry creatures and a clean car.
Mike also loved yard work, not the least due to the availability of his treasured playmate, John Deere.
Never one for a “man cave,” Mike renewed himself, body and soul, on the greens and fairways of his favorite places on earth. Mike’s cherished relationship with his golf clubs is legendary. The day he scored a hole-in-one he nearly married his 3-wood.
Mike had one dream: “to one day have enough money to live the kind of life my wife and kids do.” A most selfless and generous person, Mike always put others ahead of himself.
He will be loved and missed.
The family will conduct a private farewell and interment in Colleyville at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the Hospice Foundation of America, or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Mike will also appreciate having adult beverages raised in a toast in his memory.
