Ms. Shaul was not only my first grade teacher, but was also like a mother to my siblings and I. She would often visit my family when we lived on Bailey Station and always made sure that she took us shopping to purchase a Mother's Day gift for our mother who was ill. We have so many fond memories of Ms. Shaul. Truly she was an angel sent from heaven.  I can still see that beautiful smile of hers. On my wedding day, she hugged me and told my husband that I was her daughter. Throughout the years, I received many cards and letters from her. Just Wednesday of this week, I ran across a card that I received from her December 14, 2010. I smiled as I held it in my hand and reflected back on the days that I was in her classroom and the last time my sisters and I visited her. I whispered a prayer for her and placed it in my Bible. Today as I was reading my Bible it fell out. I picked  it up and decided to type in her name, not knowing our Heavenly Father had called her home to be with Him. I am so happy that I found this card, God had me to find it so I would know that His daughter was home resting with Him. Ms. Shaul will forever have a special place in my heart. Rest on Sweet Lady and know that your other children love and misses you. Thank you for showing us what it really means to love others and always being there for us. I have very fond memories of BJ.  I taught at CES and part of the 1st grade team.  She always had a smile and was encouraging.  Even after  moving from Collierville, we continued to stay in touch.  She never missed sending a card for my birthday and when my children were born she made each of  them a quilt.  Also, she made the 1st grade team smocks one year, which I still wore until my recent retirement last spring.  She was a blessing in my life.

I remember Memaw Shaul being sweet and caring.   I’d visited her & Doc more than few times with Karol &  our parents.  I always heard her tell my Mom  “You raised a good one” when talking about Karol.  Memaw  always made you feel welcomed.  I remember Memaw laughing & cutting up with my Mom.  After visiting Memaw, or when she send cakes from across miles— we had the sweet warm feeling that Memaw cared.  So sorry for the Shaul family’s loss.  We’re sure she‘s laughing with Doc, Mom, & Pops in heaven. God’s peace. 

Bettye Jean and Dr Cameron were the first people my husband and I met when we joined Collierville Christian Church. They made us feel so welcome. She was one of my favorite people. Sweet sweet lady. 

Betty Jean was my first cousin and my favorite cousin. I enjoyed the many times I visited her and called her. She always had a joke for me and I was trying to keep one step ahead of her trying to think of one in return, but she always had me beat. I remember she usually had her grand children around her and I was glad to meet them. And her favorite pets. Long ago I moved to Florida, but I still called her and she still had a joke for me. I visited Betty Jean  the first of January knowing that was going to be my last time to see her. Thru communication from her daughter Susan, she told me a joke and she really laughed and I told her one in return. And she laughed. When I was leaving, i told her I loved her and I heard her say, I love you too! Thank you Susan for your help and assistance in talking with her for me.

This town will miss Ms. Bettye. She was a pillar of the community and her church. She was always good to me for years and years. I will miss her sweet smile! God bless her and the family.

Mrs. Shaul was my first grade teacher, too, but she also lived across the street from my grandparents. I have so many wonderful memories of that sweet lady! Every time I saw her as an adult, she always reminded me about an apron my mom made her when I was in first grade. She always thought of others. I'm probably a teacher today because of her. Much love ♥️

Mrs. Shaul was my first grade teacher, almost 40 years ago. But I remember we always drew a song out of the metal can and sang it, she read us Charlotte’s Web, we all hand wrote Valentines, birthday cards, and get well cards. When I got married years later, she came to my shower and brought me an apple cookie jar to remember her. I could never forget!

Two things I will never forget about Bettye Jean. How she always smiled so big when she would see me at church when I served as a pastor. She always looked so elegant and she always carried this distinct presence of confidence and security in who she was. I will also never forget her generosity. I wanted to give my wife a piano for her wedding present and Mrs Shaul gave me hers and then on top of that paid to have it in tune. We couldn't take that piano with us to California when we moved, but it (and the music it played filling our house) has never left my mind. I am so very sorry for the loss her family and her community is feeling, and I give God such great praise for his precious child, Betty Jean and the legacy of her love.

When we moved to Collierville in 1995  Bettye Jean was the first person we met.  She was our across the street neighbor and was the best friend and neighbor we could have wished for.  My granddaughter was thrilled to have the horses close by and Bettye Jean offered to lend her pony to us to  for Hillary's birthday party.   She's been gone from across the street for several years but I still miss her being there.   Jimmy and I are thankful to have known her. 

She was my first grade teacher and until today, I’ve always thought her last name was Shaw. She was the sweetest woman ever! I recall being in her class and this boy kept touching me. As a first grader, I did not like it. I went up and told her that he kept touching me. With the sweetest face and voice, She told me, hit him back. I did not hit him back, but I remember her teaching me to stand up for myself. What a sweet sweet woman! 

Mrs. Shaul impacted so many lives. A true servant leader that dedicated her life to making others’ lives better. - She was a role model teacher  that made children want to grow up and choose the path of education.  She had the perfect balance of firmness and sweetness that kept students never wanting to disappoint. I was blessed to not only to have had her as my first grade teacher, but to have grown up with her as a neighbor to my grandparents. -  A beautiful soul that was a gift to all that knew her. <3 

I pictured Lisa Ackerman , Mother Hays, Hazel Richmond and Ida Pearl Mann opening the big school doors in Heaven to welcome Betty Jean Shaul. A popular teacher,  which is the ultimate compliment. If kids like you , then you are doing something right. We were fortunate as students at Collierville Elementary to benefit from her wise and kind counsel. Her family was blessed to have such a wonderful Mama. Everyone, I mean everyone loved Mrs. Shaul. Collierville will miss her. Prayers for the family that she cherished. 💜✝️💜

Betty Jean was always so kind and patient with me when I first came to CES.  She was the perfect teacher and everyone wanted her for their child.  Anyone who knew her was  Blessed .  Prayers for all her family.

15 years later I ran into her at the grocery store, I was quite pregnant and a few weeks later a package came in the mail to me from her.   She made a quilt for my daughter.

We will miss Bettye Jean, whom I always called Memaw,  so much!  She was a caring, giving and loving woman who was also very witty and feisty.   The last time I saw her, she was carrying heavy milk cans out to her pasture -- which she was not supposed to be doing because she was unstable.  I was out walking the neighborhood one morning and saw her down her driveway.  With a twinkle in her eye, she asked/begged me not to tell Karol and Andy that she was out and about.  :)   She was so kind and thoughtful, always sending cakes to us whenever Karol came home to Oak Ridge.  They were so good!!  What a great cook/baker she was!!  While  Memaw has finally been reunited with her Doc, and heaven is certainly brighter, we extend our deepest sympathies to the whole Shaul family, and to all of us who loved and will sorely miss our Memaw.
