Born on August 27, 1943 in Memphis, TN, Doris was the daughter of Kelly, Sr. and Lillian (Rounds) Lester. A lifelong Memphian, she graduated from Melrose High School Class of 1961. She attended Los Angeles Metropolitan College of Business in California for two years before returning to Memphis. She married her former husband Thurman Richardson, Sr., who preceded her in death, in 1968 and they had two children, Michelle Susanne Richardson and Thurman Lee Richardson, II (Ted).
Doris was a lifelong reader and has read thousands of books. She could almost always be found with a book in hand, and she loved all genres. She also kept journals since she was a young girl and managed to write daily for most of her adult life. She was an avid sports fan and has been known to keep handwritten schedules every game, match, or tournament she had to watch over any given weekend so she could keep it all straight. She loved her children, Michelle and Ted, more than life itself and adored her granddaughters, Greer and Miller.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Charles, Kelly Jr., Thurman, Freddie, and Richard. She is survived by her children, Michelle Richardson and Thurman (Holly) Richardson, II and granddaughters, Greer and Miller Richardson, her sister, Janice (Henry) Rooks, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
We will be celebrating Doris/Mom/Nana’s life in the way she wanted on Saturday, June 17 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm in Ivy Hall at the Collierville Funeral Home, 3863 Bailey Station Road, Collierville, TN. This will be a come and go reception, with her children saying a few words about their mom and leading a prayer at 10:30 am. For anyone wishing to make a donation in her name, two charities close to Doris’ heart are St. Jude and the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
