Matthew Thomas O’Malley, 27, passed away on October 8, 2019. Matthew was born on May 5, 1992. Though initially from Texas, Matthew lived in the Memphis area for almost twenty years. Matthew had many passions, including welding and woodwork, but he was most dedicated to playing music and was a gifted guitar and piano player. He played at a variety of venues, including a recurring position performing at the Lookout at the Pyramid and two consecutive years performing with a band at the Mothers’ Day brunch at the Memphis Botanical Gardens. He also wrote and recorded songs with the now-disbanded group, Objekt 12. In his “day job,” he was a beloved server at Huey’s restaurant in Germantown, at which he had worked for the past six years. He was working on his degree for Mechanical Engineering Technology at Southwest Tennessee Community College, where he had received the distinction of Outstanding Student in the spring of 2019. In addition, he was a laboratory assistant within this department. He is survived by his loving, longtime girlfriend, Ashley Thephasone, his father, Tom, and his mother, Beth, as well as his three siblings: Michael (wife Rebecca, son Jarvis), Laura (husband Alden), and Daniel. The family will receive friends for a visitation on Friday, October 18, from 6-8 pm at Collierville Bible Church (806 Wolf River Blvd., Collierville), and funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 19, at 10 am, also at Collierville Bible Church. A short graveside service will follow at Memphis Memory Gardens at 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Rd. in Memphis. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to one of the following charities that Matthew had been connected to:
Asha’s Refuge (http://www.ashasrefuge.org/): a refugee ministry in Memphis
Rio Brave Ministries (https://www.rio-bravo.org/): a children’s home in Reynosa, Mexico that Matthew made many service trips to.
One by One Ministries (https://www.onebyoneusa.org/): a ministry in Memphis to expecting mothers in need; Matthew’s mother, Beth, volunteered with one of the mothers enrolled in this program, and Matthew helped Beth many times.
