

Born on November 22, 1954, in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Phil proudly served in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CW4). As a pilot, he flew the C-12 and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. Throughout his military career, he earned several honors, including three Meritorious Service Medals, a Joint Service Commendation Medal, four Army Commendation Medals, and two Army Achievement Medals, among others.
After his military service, Phil continued his aviation career as a pilot for FedEx until his retirement. Known for his professionalism, skill, and leadership, he earned the position of Line Check Airman. He was known for his professionalism, skill, and leadership, earning the position of Line Check Airman. He also mentored numerous pilots throughout his career; those who flew with him praised him as he quickly stood out as an outstanding pilot and mentor and a true gentleman, respected by all who knew him.
Phil is survived by his wife, May Ann Butas Martinito, his daughter, Jennifer L. Hamm, of Clermont, Florida; and his grandsons, Mason L. Hamm of Clermont, Wyatt J. Hamm of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Gatlin W. Hamm of Clermont. He is also survived by his siblings: Robert Salas of Alamogordo, New Mexico; Clarence Salas of Gallup, New Mexico; Mario Salas of Las Vegas, New Mexico; and Beth Sides of Oregon.
Phil will be remembered for his big heart, quiet strength, generous spirit, and deep love for his family and friends.
