Peggy was born in Steubenville, Ohio, as the third daughter of John and Margaret Fletcher in 1937. She attended Bethany College in West Virginia, and later worked as a secretary for Youngstown Kitchens, where she met and married James “Jim” Hitchcock. Peggy had a successful career as a corporate executive secretary, but developed a great interest in the legal field. To further this interest, she attended community college in her 50s, and went on to become a lead paralegal in a prestigious West Palm Beach law firm.
Together, Jim and Peggy enjoyed landscaping and gardening, and always had a home-improvement project in the works. They shared a deep love of reading, and devoured mystery novels at a rate of 2-3 per week. In the mid-80s, she wrote “The Garage Sale Handbook,” a comedic presentation of the most profitable ways to hold a garage sale – an activity the two also enjoyed. She was interviewed about the book on Good Morning America, and it is still available to purchase today.
Peggy was a deeply devout Christian who attended church regularly throughout her life until recent years when health issues prevented it. She was very active in church activities; teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, and selflessly volunteering her time and resources for fundraising and community events. She often supported less-fortunate families at Christmas, and gave generously to many charities and humanitarian causes.
Peggy and Jim had two children, Alisen and Susan, who mourn the loss of their mother today, as well as their father, who passed away just over 10 years ago in January 2014. Peggy will be remembered and missed by Alisen’s husband Ed and their three children, Andrew, Deanna and Bobby – as well as Susan’s son Kyle. She is survived and loved by Geoff, Peg and John, the children of her dear departed sister Beverly – and by John, Amy, Carl and Lori, the children of her dear, late sister Barbara.
The family invites you to join them in remembrance of Peggy on Friday, February 9, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Blake-Doyle Funeral Home, located at 226 W. Collings Avenue, Collingswood, New Jersey 08108. A memorial service will follow from 6:00 PM to 6:45 PM.
In honor of Peggy's great love of animals, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make a donation to your local animal shelter.
