Betty Lee was born in Waurika, Oklahoma on June 24, 1921, the second of three children of James and Bessie May Bass Elliott. She was raised by her maternal grand-parents, Mary Peppert Bass and Charles Bass in Enid Oklahoma where she spent her formative years. She graduated from Enid High School and attended Phillips University. As was typical of Betty Lee, she attended flight school and soloed in an aging single engine aircraft. Her early working career began at Enid Army Flying Base where she met her husband, Lt. Robert Davidson, of the Army Air Corps. Following her marriage she and her husband lived at bases throughout the United States and in Okinawa Japan. Betty Lee moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming where she became Director of Youth Activities for F.E. Warren Air Force Base, a position she held for 27 years. After retiring she was asked to return to the Air Force Base as the Head of the Child Development Center.
Following her second retirement Betty Lee worked for the Wyoming State Legislature and volunteered for the state’s Travel Commission, helping visitors explore every aspect of life in the Cowboy State. She was also a member of the Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, a place where she found very close friends and spiritual joy.
Throughout her life Betty Lee lived an exciting and energy-filled life, traveling the Far East on her own including a visit to Vietnam during the war to visit with her daughter, Lt. Sally Davidson. Later trips with Elder Hostel were made to China during the “revolution”, Egypt, Turkey, and Greece.
In 2006 Betty moved to Colorado Springs to be with her daughter Sally and son-in-law, Allan Creely. She quickly joined Christ The King Lutheran Church where she became a favorite of the congregation.
She was preceded in death by the mother, father, sister and brother. She is survived by her daughter, Sally, and granddaughters, Allison and Marsha Creely.
Betty Lee Davidson was a strong woman who believed deeply in power of prayer. She always encouraged and taught children, stayed up to date with the news, and was a friend to everyone she met. She was proud to be a “character” in the best meaning of the word. She will be missed.
The family thanks Betty Lee’s other family at View Point and Gentiva Hospice for the loving care that she received.
A Celebration of Betty Lee Davidson’s life will be held at View Point on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 2:00 PM.
